Hair That Beats the Heat: 5 Ways to Avoid Frizz + Humidity In Summer

By Nick Arrojo

Prevention is better than cure. Humid air is moist air. When your hair is dry, it expands into puff balls, literally reaching out for the moisture in the air. Hair that’s well moisturized won’t need to reach out for moisture. Using products that moisturize is your first and best defense against humidity hair and frizz. We recommend conditioning with Whipped Treatment. A specialty treatment conditioner with olive oil, shea butter, hydrolyzed keratin, and green tea leaf, the richly moisturizing formula puts the goodness back for thick and full, lustrous hair.

Don’t shampoo too much. We all love freshly cleansed hair but too much shampooing can dry out and dull the hair leaving it prone to frizz. In summer, shampoo two or three times weekly at the most. Remember to opt for a sulfate-free shampoo as sulfates are extra-drying. We recommend Shine Luxe Shampoo. With macadamia and grape seed oils it’s great for keeping hair soft, manageable, shiny, and smooth. If you really love the feeling of freshly cleansed hair every day, go for ReNEW Co-Wash. A purifying, non-foaming cleansing conditioner with no harsh or drying sulfates or detergents, it weightlessly cleans, softens, and conditions.

Bring the BOHO with a braided topknot: Smart styling choices is another way to beat frizz and humidity. Stay cool and look cool with a boho-inspired braided topknot that keeps your hair in check and off your neck. Spray Refinish Dry Shampoo throughout hair to add grip and texture. Gather hair into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic. Braid the length of the ponytail all the way to the end and secure with a clear elastic. Next, coil the braid around itself, securing with pins as you go. Finish with Firm Hold Hairspray to secure the look and calm any flyaways.

Go shorter in summer. The right haircut can make a big difference to how much you suffer from frizz during hot months. A good trick is to go shorter. Shorter shapes are easier to care for, manage, and control. If a change of style is too much, even trimming off 2-3 inches will be helpful. The ends of our hair are the oldest, driest part of the hair shaft. Cutting off the ends removes these dry, damaged bits, which helps to keep hair smooth and manageable.

Make a silicone-based defrizz serum your bestie. If your hair is curly and is prone to frizz, use the smoothing properties of high-grade silicone product, like Defrizz Serum. Cocktail this with our moisture-based Styling Cream to lock in pillowy soft curls without the dryness or the frizz. If your hair is straighter, and you also suffer frizzies, or have grey hair with frizz, use Defrizz Serum with Frizz Control for a great, frizz-beating combination of moisture and silicone.

However you wear your hair this summer, remember:

LOVE YOUR HAIR. WE DO!
